The following lists information about the materials used in the visualization process that can help you build your self-confidence in developing your hand drawing skills using today's technology.

Pencils, Pens and Markers

Sanford Col-erase Pencil
Carmine Red Wood pencil for creating red pencil mock-up drawings.
(Sanford/Berol Company)

Berol Draughting 314 Pencil
Wood pencil with a soft graphite lead, deep black tones, ideal for sketching, smudges easily (Sanford/Berol Company)

Sanford Prismacolor Pencil / Berol Prismacolor Pencil
(Sanford and Berol company names appear on different pencils) Wood pencil, soft leads, light-resistant pigment, sold individually or in boxed sets of 12, 24, 48, 72, 96, and 120. Most the color pencil drawings I create are made with this pencil.

Derwent Studio Colored Pencils
Made in England by Rexel Cumberland. Wood pencil, harder and drier leads than Prismacolor pencils, sold individually or in sets of 12, 24, 36, and 72.

Pentel Sign Pen
Felt tip (fiber tip) pen, water base ink, medium tip, easily found in art and office supply stores, ideal for quick sketches. Half of the drawings in my book Drawing Shortcuts were made with this pen. Solvent-based AD markers can be applied directly over pen lines without smearing the linework.

Pilot Fineliner Pen
Felt tip (fiber tip) pen, water base ink, fine tip, easily found in art and office supply stores, ideal for quick sketches. A perfect pen to pair with the Pentel Sign Pen as they both have a similar 'drawing action' and ink color.

Staedtler Lumocolor 318 "F" Pen
Plastic tip pen, permanent ink, lightfast, quick drying on mylar, refillable, available with different point options (F, S, M). Half of the drawings in my book Drawing Shortcuts were made with this pen. Will smear if it comes in contact with solvent-based AD markers.

Staedtler Lumocolor 311 "F" Pen
Same pen options as the 318 pen, but has non-permanent (water-based) ink. Linework not as black or dense compared to the 318 pens.

Chartpak AD Marker
Best performing colored marker I've ever used. All of the colored marker drawings in my book were done with these markers. Sold individually or in different themed sets of 12, 25 and 100. Less expensive than the other colored markers (Prismacolor by Letraset, Pantone and Copic markers).

Minimum 24 colors:
Cool Gray #2, #4, #7, Cadmium Yellow, Cadmium Orange, Cadmium Red, Salmon, Flesh, Mauve, Purple Sage, Willow, Apple Green, Moss Green, Slate Green, Evergreen, Turquoise Green, Sky Blue, Blueberry, Azure, Buff, Suntan, Light Sand, Pale Cherry, Mocha.

Recommended 36 colors:
Colors listed above, plus: Cool Gray #1, #3, #5, Naples Yellow, Peach, Deep Salmon, Pale Flesh, Lilac, Grass Green, Light Olive, Pale Indigo, Sand.

Chartpak AD / Pantone Marker Color Comparison
The following list of my 36 recommended Chartpak AD marker colors and the equivalent marker color made by Pantone by Letraset. There are no exact matches between each brand, but this list identifies the markers I established to have the closest similarities in color. Although most of the colors matched fairly well, I discovered that the greens were quite dissimilar and rather difficult to cross match. I recommend that if you have access to a local art supply store carrying both brands, use this comparison chart as a starting point to generate your own marker evaluation.

Staedtler Mars Plastic Eraser
Straight forward white plastic eraser, great for general erasing needs.

Panasonic KP-4A Portable Pencil Sharpener
This battery powered pencil sharpener is lightweight, inexpensive and a powerful tool when you are using colored pencils.

Koh-I-Noor Electric Eraser
Durable machine with a slip-chuck that holds 7" erasing strips. Use the standard white erasers. Beware of the imbibed erasers as they can often leave an oily residue on the paper or mylar surface.

X-Acto No. 1 Knife
The industry standard knife with the number 11 blades. Purchase the blades in bulk packages as they dull quickly.

Bienfang Tracing Paper
This standard white tracing paper is available in 12", 18", 24" and 36" wide rolls. Inexpensive and quite versatile.

Clearprint 1000H Drafting Velum
This tracing vellum is a popular technical paper. It's transparent, smooth and durable. I use this paper in both the 8½"x11" precut sheets and standard roll sizes

AZON Herculene Film (Mylar)
Mylar is available in precut sheets and rolls, single mat finish or double mat finish, in 3 and 4 mil thickness. I prefer drawing with the thinner single mat material at it is much more transparent.

Reprographic Options

Large Format B&W copier
24", 30", 36" roll paper or sheet fed papers, vellum and Mylar.

Digital OCE Copier
24", 30", 36" roll papers, vellum and Mylar, variable enlargement and reduction.

Diazo Machine
Outdated technology involving light sensitive bond paper, vellum or Mylar and ammonia development. Papers available in 24x36" and 30x42" blueline, blackline and sepia. Fades over time. Not recommended for office or school use anymore due to potentially toxic fumes.

Orthographic Process
Various lens-based machines, often called "stat cameras" that expose images onto orthographic films and papers, which are developed in chemicals. Outdated process, replaced by large format scanners.

Standard Flatbed Scanners
Inexpensive 8½ x 14" color scanners and more costly 11x17" scanners for capturing color and B&W high-resolution artwork.

Large Format Color Scanners
Up to 36' wide scans of original artwork. Images are captured and transferred to CD's for further processing.
